Saturday Night Live (SNL) December 13, 1975 – Richard Pryor / Gil Scott-Heron

Pryor died with a smile on his face according to his wife Jennifer. He died as a result of cardiac arrest in Encino, California. He was 65 years old and had just turned 9 days previous. Jennifer took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead after her own attempts to revive him.Born Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor III, Richard Pryor was a comedian well known for his outspoken and often vulgar routines. He also appeared in a lot of movies, often teaming up with actor Gene Wilder. He once set himself on fire while freebasing cocaine, suffering burns on about half of his entire body.

Bob Ross

Bob Ross’ New Joy of Painting
Bob Ross died at the age of 52 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida from lymphoma. Ross was a painter who is best known for his television show “The Joy of Painting”, which was shown on public broadcast stations across the United States. During each episode Ross would show viewers the art of oil painting using the quick-study technique that kept colors to a minimum and broke the whole process down to simple steps that anyone could follow.

Bruce Lee

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story

Although his death is surrounded by several rumors, the official version is that he died of cerebral edema, which is a swelling of the brain. What caused the cerebral edema is still not clear. He was the best martial artist ever. He practiced several styles of Kung-Fu and was the creator of his own style: Jeet Kune Do. He filmed several movies both in Hollywood and in Hong Kong.

Fred Rogers

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood – Adventures in Friendship

At the age of 74 (less than a month before his 75th birthday in fact) Rogers passed away as a result of stomach cancer.  He was interred in a mausoleum at Latrobe’s Unity Cemetery in Pittsburgh. Fred McFeely Rogers will forever be known as the beloved sweater-wearing, shoe-changing Mr. Rogers from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Eazy E

Wright learned that he had full-blown AIDS in March of ‘95 when checking into a medical center for what he believed was bronchitis. He then died within the same month. Eric Lynn Wright (aka Eazy-E) was best known as one of the members of rap super group NWA that also consisted of Dr. Dre, MC Ren, Ice Cube and DJ Yella (though Cube left the group before its demise).

There was a well publicized “beef” between Eazy and Dre once the group broke up, though they made up with each other shortly before Eazy died.

River Phoenix

On Halloween, at the age of 23, Phoenix was partying at a nightclub in Hollywood with his brother Joaquin, his sister Rain, and actress Samantha Mathis, as well as other friends and drug dealers when he took a lethal combination of drugs that led to his overdose and ultimately his demise. Though River Jude Phoenix was a singer-songwriter as those close to him are more familiar with, he will always be remembered as one hell of an actor who tragically died probably before his best work came to fruition.

Chris Farley

Saturday Night Live (SNL) The Best of Chris Farley

Farley overdosed on a combination of cocaine and morphine, though artery disease atherosclerosis is said to have played a significant role.He had been in and out of drug rehab as many as seventeen times.  His brother found his body in his New York apartment. He was 33 years old. Christopher Crosby “Chris” Farley was a comedian/actor who got his fame from being on Saturday Night Live.

John Candy

Uncle Buck

Candy suffered a coronary embolism, which led to a heart attack, and died in his sleep at the age of 43 while in Durango, Mexico for the filming of his last movie Wagons East. John Franklin Candy was one of the most adored comedic actors of his time, particularly throughout the 80s and early 90s.

He appeared on the Canadian sketch-comedy show SCTV before breaking into movies. Memorable films included Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, and Spaceballs to name a few. He even had a cartoon called Camp Candy, in which an animated version of himself ran a children’s summer camp.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Lookin’ Out The Window

Vaughan was involved in a Helicopter crash, just after performing at a concert with band Double Trouble, a show that also featured the Robert Cray Band and Eric Clapton.

He was supposed to leave by bus, but Clapton’s crew had a helicopter with an extra seat and he took it. That helicopter took five people including Vaughan, and they were all killed. The official cause of Vaughan’s death was loss of blood as a result of a severed aorta. Stevie Ray Vaughan is considered by many to be one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived. He played a brand of blues-rock that is often imitated, and Vaughan’s songs still get heavy radio airplay to this day.

Janis Joplin

Down On Me (Live)

Joplin’s body was discovered at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Los Angeles where she had been staying for nearly 2 months. She was found to have overdosed on heroin, and probably died as a result of the drug having been mixed with her alcohol consumption. Janis Joplin was a singer/songwriter from Texas who sang for the band Big Brother and the Holding Company before going on the solo route. Her biggest hits were “Piece of My Heart” (with Big Brother and the Holding Company) and “Me and Bobby McGee” (a cover of a Kris Kristofferson song).
