Dick King-SmithRonald Gordon King-Smith better known by his pen name Dick King-Smith

Born March 27, 1922,  Bitton, Gloucestershire, UK.

King-Smith died at his home near Bath, Somerset, on 4 January 2011 at the age of 88.

Dick King-Smith was a prolific English children’s author, best known for writing The Sheep-Pig, retitled in the United States as Babe the Gallant Pig, on which the movie Babe was based. He was awarded an Honorary Master of Education degree by the University of the West of England in 1999 and appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2010 New Year Honours.

In June 2010, he was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer, and died in January 2011.

Mick Karn was an English multi-instrumentalist musician and songwriter, who came to fame as the bassist for the art rock band Japan, from 1974 to 1982.

She died of natural causes aged 65 on 3 January 2011 in New York City.

Haworth was born in Sussex, to a textile magnate father and a mother who trained as a ballet dancer (Haworth had trained in ballet herself). She was fifteen years old when she appeared in her first film Exodus (1960) under contract to Otto Preminger, for whom she also worked in the 1965 film In Harm’s Way. She appeared in films throughout the 1960s before moving to television appearances. She played Sally Bowles in the original Broadway cast of the musical Cabaret (in 1966). She also starred in the 1972 horror film Tower of Evil.

Gerry Rafferty

Gerry RaffertyGerald “Gerry” Rafferty

In November 2010, Rafferty was admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. He died at his daughter Martha’s home in StroudGloucestershire on 4 January 2011 of liver failure. Rafferty had been an alcoholic for many years.

Gerry Rafferty was a popular music giant at the end of the ’70s, thanks to the song “Baker Street” and the album City to City. His career long predated that fixture of Top 40 radio, however; indeed, by the time he cut “Baker Street” Gerry Rafferty had already been a member of two successful groups, The Humblebums and Stealers Wheel.

Anne Francis died on January 2, 2011, at the age of 80, due to complications of pancreatic cancer at a retirement home in Santa Barbara, California, a city in which she was a longtime resident.

Anne Francis was an American actress, best known for her role in the science fiction film classic Forbidden Planet (1956), and as the female private detective in the television series Honey West (1965–66). She won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy award for her role in Honey West. Francis holds the distinction of starring in the first TV series with a female detective character’s name in the title.

Peter Postlethwaite- Actor

Pete PostlewaitePeter William “Pete” Postlethwaite

Born February 7, 1946, Warrington, Lancashire, England

Postlethwaite was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1990, and had one testicle removed. Postlethwaite died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on 2 January 2011, at the age of 64, after suffering from cancer.

After minor television appearances including in The Professionals, Postlethwaite’s first success came with the film Distant Voices, Still Lives in 1988. He played a mysterious lawyer, Mr. Kobayashi, in The Usual Suspects, and he appeared in Alien 3, In the Name of the Father, Amistad, Brassed Off, The Shipping News, The Constant Gardener, The Age of Stupid, Inception, and in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet.

On December 29, 2010 at the age of 96, Bill Erwin passed away of age-related cause in Studio City, Los Angeles.

Bill Erwin was an American televisionfilm, and stage actor with over 250 television and film credits. As a veteran character actor, he was widely known for his role of Sid Fields, an embittered, irascible man on Seinfeld– for which he received an Emmy nomination – as well his regular appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Grant McCune

Grant McCune died on December 27th at his home in Hidden Hills, California of pancreatic cancer. He was 67.

Grant McCune, one of the original ILM team members who worked on Star Wars. McCune served as the first model shop supervisor at ILM, leading the team that would construct such classic vehicles such as the X-wing fighter, Star Destroyer, and Millennium Falcon. Like almost all the effects artists assembled for the first Star Wars, McCune’s responsibilities extended beyond his credited title of “chief model maker.” Sharp-eyed Star Wars fans know that he is one of the Death Star gunners flinching when the battle station fires its main cannon.

Born October 6, 1949, ArubaNetherlands Antilles.

He died at the age 61 on the morning of December 30, 2010, in a hotel in Saint Petersburg, due to heart failure. His agent John Seine said Farrell was complaining of breathing problems after performing with his band the evening before. Farrell’s body was reportedly discovered by hotel staff after he failed to respond to a wake-up call.

Bobby Farrell was a dancer and performer, best known as the male member of the successful 1970’s pop and disco group Boney M.
